Company History

The S.F. Sulfur Corporation sulfur plant (formerly Stauffer Chemical Company ) is located on a thirteen acre site in Freeport, Texas.  Built by Hans Stauffer, this facility has been producing various types of processed sulfur since 1916.  Mr. Stauffer lost his first plant in San Francisco to an earthquake in the late 1800's. The Freeport site was designed to withstand such a disaster.  To date, over one million tons of processed sulfur has been produced at this plant.  The facility includes over 40,000 square feet of warehousing space.

S.F. Sulfur logoThis plant site was chosen because the property is adjacent to inland waterway shipping lanes and there were vast deposits of Frasch sulfur in close proximity to Freeport, Texas.  Borates and agricultural sulfur were the first products produced on-site.  Borates were brought in from Europe to produce boric acid.  To balance the ship, sulfur was loaded as ballast.  In 1918, Hans Stauffer became the first supplier of Rubbermakers Sulfur to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. Eighty years later, the same high quality Rubbermaker's and industrial sulfur products are being produced in this plant.

In January 1993, Georgia Gulf Sulfur purchased from Rhone-Poulenc Basic Chemicals company the plant in Freeport, Texas.
